HANNOVER, GERMANY — On July 2, the PREVENT Project (Horizon EU) officially launched its German pilot in Hannover. Hosted by ÜSTRA Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG, the initiative aims to strengthen cybersecurity and infrastructure resilience across Europe’s e-mobility ecosystem by testing new technologies in a real-world environment.

A core focus of the PREVENT initiative is establishing robust digital defenses for electric vehicle infrastructure. The project's Work Package 5 (WP5) is tasked with defining and implementing a novel "system-of-systems" cybersecurity testing framework. WP5 prepares the pilot sites to deploy these solutions, focusing specifically on automated charging use cases equipped with cyber-secure-by-design LiFi technology. To ensure resilience, the WP5 framework is actively validated through rigorous lab tests, secure test beds, and attack simulations.

For the optical wireless communication sector, the pilot represents a significant step forward. aeroLiFi has partnered with the project to integrate its PreLiFi communication technology, bringing secure, light-based data transmission directly into the e-mobility network.

The German pilot brings together a focused group of partners to execute these goals:

  • Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft: Serving as the pilot lead, managing automated charging systems, battery storage, and EVSE infrastructure.

  • aeroLiFi: Supplying the core LiFi communication technology (PreLiFi) to enhance secure connectivity.

  • Technische Universität Dresden: Providing research and development support for the PreLiFi system.

  • ÜSTRA Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG: Supplying the operational site and real-world testing environment.

By testing LiFi in an active transit and charging environment, the PREVENT Project is validating how optical communications can secure the future of electric vehicle infrastructure.
